IOSH - Who are they? IOSH is the Chartered body for health and safety professionals. IOSH is the world’s biggest professional health and safety membership organisation, with over 43’000 members worldwide. Known as the voice of the health and safety profession, campaigning on issues that affect millions of working people.
IOSH International Membership
Primarily IOSH is a UK-based organisation, although IOSH has an ever expanding international membership, now in over 100 other countries. IOSH approve courses at 35 UK universities and 22 Universities internationally.

We encourage supervisors and managers with the health and safety management role to hold an IOSH Managing Safely certificate. Why do I need to manage a workplace safely? The IOSH Managing Safely is a key qualification for all supervisors and line managers. Accidents can happen in any workplace and avoiding them can be a simple process.
Accidents in the workplace are very common and cost an estimated £14.1 billion in injuries and ill health*.
Around 621,000 injuries occur each year with 144 of those resulting in death*.
These statistics equal 30.4 million working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury*.

Course Learning Aim:
The IOSH Managing Safely course gives managers and supervisors knowledge and skills they need to manage health and safety within their team. In addition, this course enables managers and supervisors to recognise how they can influence, control and monitor risk to improve safety and health issues in the workplace.

Module1: Introducing Managing Safely: Some managers may see safety and health as an add-on to their role – even an intrusion. The first module makes it clear that managers are accountable for their teams, and makes a persuasive case for managing safely.
Module 2: Assessing Risk: This module defines and demystifies ‘risk’ and ‘risk assessment’. Risk assessments and a simple scoring system are introduced, and delegates carry out a series of assessments.
Module 3: Controlling Risks: Here the session tackles cutting down risks, concentrating on the best techniques to control key risks, and how to choose the right method
Module 4: Understanding Responsibilities: This module looks at the demands of the law and how the legal system works, and for those who do not have strict guidelines or laws, there is guidance and placeholders to fill with relevant information, and introduces a safety and health management system.
Module 5: Understanding Hazards: All the main issues any operation has to deal with are covered in this module – aggression and violence, asbestos, bullying, chemicals, computer workstations, confined spaces, drugs and alcohol, electricity, fire, getting in and out, heights, housekeeping, lighting, manual handling, noise, plant and machinery, radiation, slips and trips, stress, temperature, vehicles and transport, and vibration.
Module 6: Investigating Incidents: The session starts with why incidents should be investigated, and goes on to cover why things go wrong, and how to carry out an investigation when they do.
Module 7: Measuring Performance: This module explains how checking performance can help to improve safety and health. Delegates learn how to develop basic performance indicators, and get to grips with auditing and proactive and reactive measuring

A project Assignment: A Work-based risk assessment at your workplace.The Project Assignment comprises of a Risk Assessment form, which you must completed based on a fictional or real work-place scenario. Your tutor assesses your risk assessment, providing a grade and feedback.
Upon successful completion of the course and assessment, students are awarded a Managing Safely certificate from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) – the world’s largest health and safety membership organisation. Language requirement: Whilst there is no pre-requisite for this course, IELTS 4-5 is recommended to ensure quality comprehension of the subject matter.

He graduated from Columbia Southern University, Alabama, USA with a Master of Science in occupational health and safety.
